“The Kgwanyape band was led by the late Duncan Senyatso, one of Botswana’s greatest ever songwriters. The incarnation of the band that this recording captures is a surprisingly easy blend of African rhythms , rock and Celtic melodies amongst other things, betraying the diverse origins of the musicians that ended up in front of the microphone: Batswana rhythm section and singers, English North Country mandolin player, German guitarist and Aussie flautist.
In the spring of 1987, I hitched up the Shifty caravan and made the trek up to the Botswana mining town of Jwaneng, famous for very little other than diamonds. Duncan’s family were working on the mine and the expats had been posted to local NGOs. They found each other through music.” Lloyd Ross
